Clearwing Butterfly Citizen Science Game

The Clearwing Butterfly game is a citizen science experiment we developed with Mónica Arias, Doris Gomez and Marianne Elias at the INSP Lab at the Institut de l’information scientifique et technique and the Centre d’Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Evolutive (CEFE) in France.

The researchers wanted to know why some species of butterflies (living in South American tropical forests) have evolved transparent wings, and specifically how it might benefit them. This game was the first of our camouflage perception games to feature a moving background - and was designed to closely resemble the natural environment where these butterflies live.
